The Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission released a report in 2023 identifying recommendations to Congress and federal agencies on improving wildfire management and research. One recommendation states that a wildfire-research coordinating body should be established to identify research gaps and science priorities. The Science and Technology Policy Institute, a federally funded research and development center operated by IDA, was charged with identifying wildland fire science and technology gaps and priorities based on eight existing reports in anticipation of a wildland fire workshop held in June 2024.
