Position:  Research Assistant Policy Analyst
Description

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers serving the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Department of Homeland Security, Unified Commands and Defense Agencies in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.

The Strategy, Forces and Resources Division (SFRD) performs integrated, interdisciplinary studies of plans and policies related to national security strategy, the structure and capabilities of and foreign forces, and the infrastructure supporting forces.

Primary Responsibilities

The position is for a Research Assistant to support a portfolio of studies on nuclear weapons policy and strategy.  The portfolio utilizes a mix of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches to explore a range of issues germane to the planning of the U.S. strategic posture and associated strategies for shaping the nuclear security environment.  The research assistant will work with analysts from multiple divisions on a diverse set of topics.  Some research tasks will be narrowly focused, but others will require a longer-term effort and considerable analytical autonomy.

Requirements
  • An MA or MS in international relations, national or international security studies, or some related national security discipline is preferred. Very strong candidates with BS will also be considered.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, a capacity for independent thinking and judgment, and familiarity with the national security establishment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively to a team approach are also essential.
